"Book-em Dan-O" .....Dan Ormesher in Double win
2008 - Christmas Tournament - London
Saturday 29th November saw us host our 35th Annual Christmas Tournament.
Our numbers were slightly down on last year, with a much higher than average ratio of men to women playing which created difficulties in running the mixed event in particular. The badminton at Woking was not without incident in the afternoon as play was interupted by a fire evacuation out into the cold and wet with about 100 excitable children who were attending birthday parties at the leisure centre.
In the ladies doubles Melanie Dorval from Air Canada Montreal and Julie Gentry from Air Canada UK triumph in the final against our own Kiran Durah and Amanda Mealey from Lufthansa Cologne.
The Mens doubles saw Steve Jenkins and Dan Ormesher, both BA win the final against Jas Bhambra (BA) and Garnet Earl who was entering the event for the first time as a guest from Bristol.
After winning the mens in the morning Steve & Dan were on opposite sides in mixed final, partnered by Arlene Mitcham from BA and Karen Sauermilch from Lufthansa Hamburg respectively. Dan & Karen came out on top in a closely fought final to give Dan his "double win".
Despite all the games during the day we all just about had enough energy left to keep the dancefloor occupied during a very lively evening.
I'd like to say a big thank you to Jackie & Billu in particular for all their help both prior to and during the event, also to the team of drivers who took the overseas drivers from the hotel to Woking and back.
I've now got a whole year and a week to organise next year's event on Saturday 5th December 2009 !!!
We'll post some photos of the event in the near future.

Getting to Jury's Inn from Heathrow Airport
There are several ways to get from Heathrow to the Jury's Inn. The only one which takes you direct to the door of the hotel is the H9 Hotel Hoppa Bus costing £4 for a single journey.
Alternatively you can get a 285 bus to Hatton Cross bus station for free (then 5 mins walk to hotel). The third option, and probably the fastest is to get an Underground train from any of the terminals to Hatton Cross which will cost £3 (then 5 mins walk to hotel). Please note that there are no lifts or escalators at Hatton Cross Underground station so you will have to carry your luggage up two flights of stairs. For more information on travel around Heathrow see link below :-

If you wish to arrange alternative accommodation in England AND make your own transport arrangements to both the Tournament and Evening Reception the package cost will be GBP 36 per person for players and GBP 23 for non-playing supporters.
