2008/2009 Cross Country kicks off
16 October 2008
Both the the mens and ladies X/C season kicked off on the 11th October with their opening fixtures in Nork Park.
On a wonderfully sunny day we managed to get 13 runners for the 1st XC of the season. A good challenging course of 8.3km, with 3 main laps and 2 small laps. The going was firm with the main lap having a medium downhill followed by a long steady uphill that did vary if steepness forcing different cadences to be applied.
A solid team performance, with Mark Taylor leading the way, produced a credable 4th place finish just behind Runneymede, with Full on Tri winning easily. The team packing was brilliant with 4 runners coming in together.

Ladies Surrey League XC - Nork Park, Banstead
The course of 2 laps of the recreation field and 2 laps of Nork Park was flat around the recreation field and then had a fairly long downhill slope to the flat around the end of the park before turning to climb back up the other side. Fabulous sunshine accompanied us and helped to make this a pleasant start to the new season. Deby led the field just behind Sonia O'Sullivan who was running for Thames Hare & Hounds. Mel was close behind Sonia and Deby and she was closely followed by Monica. Then there was a bit of a gap before I came in. But I got there just in time to see Marion race Jessie Fielding of Dulwich Park Runners, another Division 2 club, to the finish. Marion had overtaken Jessie who wasn't giving in easily and Marion had to race her to the finish. She made it with a 3 second gap and gained us an extra point! Well done Marion.
The team enjoyed support from Tamara and Gabriel, Monica's children, Tom Rowley (before he rushed off to Wimbledon to support his Woking Men's' team), John Taylor and Trevor Plows. John and Trevor also saw Marion's exciting dash to the finish. Apologies go to our leaders, Deby, Mel and Monica, for they may well have had an exciting finish too, but alas I wasn't there to see it and no one has told me about it! After the race Deby was semi conscious lying in the sunshine, Mel had gone for a further run and Monica was enjoying the post race refreshments. However, looking at the results it looks as though our 3 front runners may also have had quite a dash to the funnel.
We enjoyed a well earned rest in the beautiful sunshine before cheering on the men who
had to go up the hill 3 times.
